Barometers.

Barometric Pressure is the pressure of the atmosphere over the surface of the Earth. Barometric Pressure, also known as Air Pressure, is easily measured using a Barometer. These devices measure Barometric Pressure most commonly with Mercury or Water.

A water based Barometer, in its simplest form, consists of a sealed glass container half filled with water. A narrow spout connects to the body below the water level and rises above the water level, where it is open to the atmosphere. When the Barometric Pressure falls, the water in the spout rises and vice versa.

A mercury Barometer has a glass column, closed at one end, with an open mercury reservoir at the base. When the Barometric Pressure rises pressure on the mercury reservoir increases causing the column of mercury to rise, and vice versa.

It's a Weather Fact! 1083.6millibars (32.01inches) is the highest barometric pressure ever recorded at Agatat, USSR, December 31st 1968.

So why have your own Barometer? Well the Barometric Pressure trend is a good indicator of changes in the weather. Generally as pressure falls the weather turns more unsettled, while as Barometric pressure rises the weather becomes more settled.

Also changes and fluctuations in Barometric pressure have been scientifically linked to headaches (known, not surprisingly, as Barometric Pressure Headaches). It is fairly obvious from the way that we record air pressure, that this same pressure can have a great influence over our Physiology.  Studies have shown that Migraines occur more frequently when Barometric Pressure rises, and an early indication  allows a sufferer to deal preemptively with a severe Migraine.

Barometers can also help educate us as to how the Climate and Atmosphere work
giving an insight into changing weather patterns and trends over the course of a day, week, year, decade on onwards to climate change over hundreds and thousands of years!

But there is another terrific reason to own your own Barometer. They look Great!!! Antique Barometers would grace the walls of many homes, whereas a more modern wireless Weather Station measuring Barometric Pressure as just part of a whole host of other readings can look fantastic in this high tech era.

And maybe you can be tempted by a cool looking designer barometer!

So, whatever your reasons for owning a Barometer, check out and browse the many and varied types and you will be able to take your own Barometric Pressure reading before the Weatherman tells you. And when coupled with a Wireless weather station (Thermometer, Anemometer,Weathervane and/or Rain Gauge) you can become an amateur Meteorologist in your own right!
