Anemometers (Wind Gauges). An Anemometer, or Wind Gauge, is a device used to measure the speed of the wind. It's a Weather Fact! The fastest tornado wind speed measured is 286 mph at Wichita Falls, April 2nd, 1958. Anemometers today can work on the same basic principle but there are many and varied types now
It's a Weather Fact! - The fastest surface wind speed ever recorded was 231mph at Mt Washington, April 1912.
Record Wind Speed – The strongest wind speed ever recorded at surface level was measured at the summit of Mount Washington, during a wild storm in April 1934 where a wind gust of 231miles per hour (372 Kph) was recorded. Although wind speeds are known to exceed this in powerful tornadoes this is still the highest recorded wind speed. This record is testament to the Anemometer that measured this wind! Although you are unlikely to experience such a gust with your own Anemometer it is still interesting to see just how wild the weather can get in your part of the world. Maybe you will even be tempted into starting a weather diary to chart your weather extremes.
