Anemometers (Wind Gauges).

An Anemometer, or Wind Gauge, is a device used to measure the speed of the wind.
The simplest type of wind gauge is the cup-anemometer, consisting of four hemispherical cups mounted horizontally to each other on a vertical shaft.

It's a Weather Fact! The fastest tornado wind speed measured is 286 mph at Wichita Falls, April 2nd, 1958.

Anemometers today can work on the same basic principle but there are many and varied types now

available. These include Windmill, Hot-wire, Laser Doppler, Sonic and Pressure anemometers.
 
Generally Anemometers can be broadly split into 2 groups, Hand Held Anemometers and Wireless Anemometers. The benefit of a Hand Held Anemometer is that you can take it wherever you are, at the top of a mountain or on a cliff face overlooking the ocean, the wind speed is right there in your hands. A wireless Anemometer however allows you to take the wind speed at a fixed point from the comfort of your own home, and are often incorporated within Wireless Weather Stations.

It's a Weather Fact! - The fastest surface wind speed ever recorded was 231mph at Mt Washington, April 1912.
Your Anemometer needs to be installed in a reasonably open space to prevent distortion effects of nearby buildings and any other obstructions. Often this is difficult in an urban area, in which case the higher the better! If you can put your Anemometer on the roof, that would be great. When coupled with a Wireless weather station (Thermometer, Barometer ,Weathervane and/or Rain Gauge) you can become an amateur Meteorologist in your own right!

Extremes.

Record Wind Speed – The strongest wind speed ever recorded at surface level was measured at the summit of Mount Washington, during a wild storm in April 1934 where a wind gust of 231miles per hour (372 Kph) was recorded. Although wind speeds are known to exceed this in powerful tornadoes this is still the highest recorded wind speed. This record is testament to the Anemometer that measured this wind!
